Class 3 · Professional intelligence
Knowledge. Decoded.

The professional terminal for label intelligence.

Seven panels. One screen. Any barcoded product. Nutrition, ingredients, FSA-14 allergens, EFSA additive risk, reformulation history, live UK FSA recalls and a multi-stream intelligence rail — keyboard-first, instantly comparable, sourced from the verified data constellation below. Built for NHS procurement, retail category managers, regulators, brands and academic researchers.

The terminal · seven panels

Keyboard-first. Live data. One screen.

The Food Label Terminal compresses what a category manager, regulator or academic researcher needs about any barcoded product into one dense, scannable view — no dashboard tabs, no menu trees, no per-seat enterprise login. Trading-floor DNA, applied to food literacy.

The constellation

One terminal. Eight verified sources.

FLT is not built on any single dataset. It's the integration layer across every source that publishes UK food label intelligence — from Open Food Facts at the mainstream end to the SCANSMART I500 at the independent-grocer end, with regulator feeds, retailer-official data and manufacturer-published claims as equal citizens. The terminal reads them together.

OFF
Open Food Facts community database — ~2.8M products globally, mainstream UK retail coverage.
I500
SCANSMART verified catalogue — 155 SKUs from UK independent grocers, field-audited.
FSA
UK Food Standards Agency — live product recalls, FSA-14 allergen alerts, OFCOM-tier feed.
EFSA
European Food Safety Authority — additive safety re-evaluations, restrictions, withdrawals.
Retailer Official
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons published product feeds — where direct sources exist.
Manufacturer Official
Coca-Cola, Heinz, Unilever and others — published manufacturer data cross-referenced to label.
USDA FoodData
USDA FoodData Central — secondary cross-reference layer for nutrition macros.
OBF
Open Beauty Facts — cosmetics handoff layer (CheckIT scanner mode).

Source priority follows the SCANSMART deterministic hierarchy (per Bible §10): I500 verified → manufacturer official → retailer official → OFF → contribution. No single source dominates the read. The terminal reconciles them all.

The completeness edge

OFF covers the mainstream. The I500 covers what OFF misses.

Open Food Facts covers the mainstream — 2.8M products globally, the workhorse for what most of the UK population buys every day. But none of OFF's community contributors go inside the independent grocers where the UK's African, Caribbean, South Asian and Eastern European diaspora actually shop. The I500 is the field-audited layer that closes that gap — 155 verified products from 19 shops, built by SCANSMART field audits, store by store, label by label. FLT brings both into one literate read.

OFF status: Y* (transcription error) — barcode exists on Open Food Facts but with energy mis-keyed (164 kcal vs label's 9 kcal/97g), brand empty, ingredients empty. The community database is wrong. The I500 audit is right.
The landscape

The label-literacy slice of what Mintel and Innova sell — on a UK regulatory layer they don't have.

Mintel, Innova and Euromonitor sell commercial intelligence: positioning claims, retail-purchase location, packaging attributes, price-at-purchase, formulation trends, two-year forecasting, across millions of SKUs in 86 countries. They're built for Fortune 500 brand managers and they're priced accordingly. FLT sells a different axis — the literacy intelligence slice: Nutri-Score, NOVA, Eco-Score, additives, FSA-14 allergens, live UK FSA recalls, reformulation history. Smaller universe. Different buyer. Public-interest layer those €40,000 tools don't ship. The moat isn't the I500 alone — it's the integration: eight verified data layers, one literate read, no competitor stitching them together.

What FLT isn't

Not volume

~1,550 SKUs today, growing. Mintel indexes millions across 86 countries. We index deeper on the SKUs we cover — verified by field audit. Different game.

Not commercial intel

No positioning claims, retail location panels, packaging attributes, price history, or forecast modelling. That's what Mintel/Innova/Circana sell. FLT sells literacy and safety intelligence.

Not equivalent

If you need full CPG market intelligence, you buy Mintel. If you need to know what's on the label, who's at risk, and what's been recalled — that's FLT. The table below is honest about which axis we own.

Inside SCANSMART

One platform. Four surfaces. One mission.

SCANSMART is the School of Label Literacy — the parent platform behind CheckIT, the I500, and the Knowledge Library. The Food Label Terminal is the fourth surface: the institutional, professional gateway.

Roadmap · next institutional terminals

FLT is the first of three. Supplements + cosmetics follow.

The Food Label Terminal proves the architecture: a verified-data spine, a live regulator feed, peer-reviewed signal, an institutional command-line surface. Two adjacent categories carry the same problem shape — opaque labels, vulnerable populations, fragmented data, a literacy gap institutions need to close. Each gets its own terminal, its own audit roadmap, its own regulatory layer.

★ Now live · v0.9.1

FLT — Food Label Terminal

The institutional surface for UK food labels. 148 I500 audited SKUs (155 catalogue · 138 strict blindspot vs OFF) + 1,500 OFF community SKUs. Live FSA recalls, EFSA additive safety, reformulation history, FSA-14 allergen scan, 7-panel terminal with food-news wire (13 institutional sources).

Data: I500 · OpenFoodFacts · FSA · EFSA · WHO · Lancet · Met Office · DEFRA
Next · beta H2 2026

SLT — Supplements Literacy Terminal

The same terminal-grade architecture applied to UK food supplements + vitamins. Active-ingredient decoding, MHRA borderline-medicinal-claim flags, dosage adequacy against COMA RNI/RDAs, drug-interaction alerts, manufacturer-claim verification. Different regulatory layer to food — MHRA jurisdiction, not FSA.

Targets: MHRA · NHS Yellow Card · COMA · EU NFR · Examine.com · PubMed
Next · beta Q4 2026 · B2B-only

CLT — Cosmetics Literacy Terminal

Same terminal aesthetic on UK + EU cosmetics, for professional users only. INCI-list decoding, EU CPR allergen flags, MHRA + OPSS safety alerts, hair-relaxer / skin-lightening / sunscreen vertical deep-dives already drafted in the SCANSMART research vault. The architecture already supports it — Open Beauty Facts is OFF's sister API. Consumer cosmetics scanning ships as a CheckIT mode, not as a separate consumer product.

Targets: OPSS · MHRA · EU CPR · Open Beauty Facts · CosIng · INCI

Three terminals, one architecture. Each vertical reuses the FLT engine — proprietary verified dataset + community data + live regulator feed + peer-reviewed signal + a literacy-tier presentation layer. Each gets a separate audit programme. Institutional enquiries welcome on all three: admin@scansmart.uk.

Clinical & regulatory scope Not a clinical decision-support tool. Not a medical device. Not a regulatory authority. Not investment advice. FLT is a label-literacy intelligence surface — a reference layer for professionals making procurement, research and editorial decisions. Clinical decisions rest with the clinician. Regulatory decisions rest with the regulator.
